Agartala: Mar 23: On Sunday, the Twipra Students Federation (TSF) decided to call off the protest march that was scheduled to take place in Agartala on March 24. The protest had been organized to demand the official adoption of Roman Script as a means of writing and learning Kokborok, the indigenous language of Tripura.
The announcement to suspend the protest came after a meeting between TSF leaders and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at his official residence. Hamalu Jamatia, the General Secretary of TSF, shared that the Chief Minister had listened patiently to their concerns. He expressed his awareness of the challenges faced by students in the region and conveyed that he was not opposed to the demand for Roman Script. Jamatia acknowledged the Chief Minister’s commitment to addressing the issue, which led to the decision to postpone the protest for the time being.
TSF Vice President John Debbarma elaborated further, stating that Dr. Saha had asked for some time to find a permanent solution to the matter. The Chief Minister appealed for patience from the student body, which led the TSF to delay their protest indefinitely. Despite this, Debbarma emphasized that the TSF would not abandon the movement for Roman Script, expressing appreciation for the positive approach shown by the Chief Minister.
In a social media post, Dr. Manik Saha described the meeting with the TSF delegation as “fruitful.” He assured the students that their concerns would be addressed and expressed a willingness to collaborate in finding solutions. Dr. Saha also commended the TSF’s passion for the state’s development, expressing optimism for future efforts to build a brighter future for Tripura. The meeting marked a step toward finding common ground between the state government and student activists on this important issue.
