Agartala: Mar 20: Dr. Paresh Chandra Modak, a customer of Tripura Gramin Bank, successfully fought against illegal deductions from his account, ultimately winning a favorable court ruling. The issue began in 2022 and 2023 when Dr. Modak discovered unauthorized deductions of ₹120 from his account, violating Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations.
Despite submitting a formal application to the bank’s General Manager, attaching the RBI circular and requesting a refund with interest, the bank failed to respond satisfactorily. The Dharmanagar branch manager eventually replied, citing a new policy introduced in November 2022, allowing deductions for not maintaining a minimum balance. However, this policy didn’t apply in Dr. Modak’s case, as the deductions occurred before its implementation.
Dr. Modak then filed a case against the bank in the Unakoti District Consumer Protection Court, seeking ₹20,000 as compensation. On March 11, 2025, the court ruled in his favor, ordering the bank to pay ₹15,000 in compensation within two months, with a daily interest penalty of 9% for any delay.
This case highlights the importance of monitoring bank transactions and staying informed about RBI regulations to prevent financial exploitation. Dr. Modak’s victory serves as a reminder to consumers to take legal action when necessary to protect their rights.
