Agartala: Mar 17: In a press conference held today, Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty announced that the Mahila Congress will organize a protest march in the city on March 29 in response to the rising incidents of violence against women in the country and the state under the BJP government.
Chakraborty criticized the BJP’s claims of empowering women, asserting that the party’s public narrative of women becoming self-reliant under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership was at odds with the reality on the ground. While the BJP consistently emphasizes its focus on women’s empowerment, Chakraborty alleged that, under their rule, violence against women has significantly increased.
He presented data on crimes against women, citing an alarming 28% rise in incidents of violence against women and girls in 2024 compared to the tenure of the UP government, based on National Crime Bureau (NCB) statistics. Chakraborty went on to state that such crimes were happening every hour, underscoring the urgency of addressing this growing crisis.
The planned protest march is aimed at demanding greater safety for women and accountability from the BJP-led government. Chakraborty emphasized that while the BJP government touts its empowerment agenda, it is failing to create a safe environment for women, which he believes is a critical aspect of true empowerment.
The protest, led by the Mahila Congress, will be a significant demonstration against the BJP’s record on women’s safety and a call for immediate action to curb the rising violence against women across the country. The march on March 29 will rally for the protection of women and highlight the government’s failure to deliver on its promises of safety and security for women in India.
