Agartala: Mar 16: In the state, cannabis smuggling continues to be a rampant issue despite the constant efforts of the police to curb it. Young men, both from within the state and from neighboring regions, are frequently arrested by local and railway police for their involvement in smuggling operations. However, despite these arrests, the flow of illicit cannabis remains uninterrupted. A recent incident on Sunday at Udaipur railway station serves as yet another example of this ongoing problem.
On that day, the police received a tip-off about an individual carrying six kilograms of dried cannabis on the Kanchanjunga Express, a train traveling from Sabroom to Sealdah, with Agartala as the final destination. Acting swiftly on this information, the railway police at Udaipur station conducted a search and managed to apprehend the smuggler. The individual arrested was identified as 28-year-old Amit Dev Roy, a resident of Amtali, Agartala.
Amit was found in possession of the cannabis, which was reportedly intended to be smuggled into Agartala. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Amit works for HDFC Life Insurance, adding an interesting dimension to the case. His professional background contrasts sharply with his involvement in criminal activities, raising questions about the extent of organized smuggling networks.
At present, the police are focused on determining the next steps regarding Amit’s arrest. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities are under increasing pressure to tackle the issue of cannabis trafficking more effectively. The case highlights not only the persistence of cannabis smuggling in the state but also the need for stricter surveillance and enforcement to prevent such illegal activities from flourishing. The outcome of this case may serve as a signal for future efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking in the region.
