Agartala, March 11: The ruling BJP has strongly refuted allegations of corruption made by the Congress, challenging the opposition to present any concrete evidence against its leaders.
Addressing an urgent press conference at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday evening, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee dismissed Congress’s claim that the party is looting the country like the colonial-era East India Company, while in Tripura under Chief Minister Manik Saha without commission no government contract or work is done, calling the accusations “baseless and politically motivated.”
Reacting to Congress’s allegation at a rally today afternoon in Agartala, where AICC observer Lalji Desai accused the BJP-led central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Tripura government under Chief Minister Manik Saha of running a “government of commission,” Bhattacharjee said the public does not believe these claims.
He reminded that newspapers had reported instances of large-scale corruption during the Congress-led government in Tripura from 1988 to 1993, a period he described as marked by lawlessness.
“The younger generation might not know about the corruption and misrule of the Congress government between 1988 and 1993. That is why the people of Tripura have not forgiven them, and Congress has failed to return to power in the state since then,” he said.
Bhattacharjee also accused the CPIM of having exploited Congress’s corruption record to stay in power for 25 years. “Forget about remote areas—there was no law and order even in Agartala during their rule. Women were disrespected, kidnapped, and murdered. Just before a by-election, BJP leader Shyam Hari Sharma was murdered for political gain. Will the people of Tripura forget those dark days and stand with them now?” he questioned.
He further claimed that the opposition’s allegations were driven by fear after witnessing the massive turnout at a BJP rally in Agartala two days ago.
“Congress leaders are rattled, which is why they are making these baseless claims,” he asserted.
On CPIM’s criticism, Bhattacharjee said the party has become “microscopic” and irrelevant after forming an alliance with Congress, a party it had historically opposed.
“Their accusations don’t warrant a response, as the people of Tripura and the country are firmly with the BJP,” he concluded.
