Agartala: Feb 28: On Friday, the Gomati District Congress Party staged a protest following allegations of a scam involving HDFC Bank in Udaipur. The protesters, consisting of Congress workers and supporters, demanded that the bank immediately return all the deposited funds to the customers, along with the accrued interest.
Titton Pal, the president of the Gomati District Congress, pointed out that accusations of embezzlement against the bank had been raised since 2003. However, the bank authorities had seemingly ignored these concerns, continuing to misappropriate customers’ funds. The issue came to light in the past two to three months, revealing that nearly 82 lakh rupees had been embezzled. According to Titton Pal, though, reports suggest that the actual amount could exceed 2 crore rupees.
So far, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the scam: Abhishek Sarkar, the bank’s Relationship Officer, and Jayanta Saha, a constable from the Radhakishorepur police station. Despite this, there is growing skepticism as to why the bank manager, Suman Biswas, has not yet been arrested. The Congress Party, along with the Youth Congress, has called for the immediate arrest of Suman Biswas and anyone else involved in the fraudulent activities.
The ongoing protest has highlighted concerns over the failure of authorities to take swift action, and the Congress party has demanded that the police thoroughly investigate the scam, ensuring that all those responsible, including high-ranking officials at the bank, face justice. The incident has raised serious questions about the bank’s practices and the effectiveness of oversight mechanisms in place to protect the public’s financial interests.
