Agartala: Feb 21: International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21 to promote linguistic diversity, multilingual education, and the preservation of all mother languages. This day commemorates the Bengali Language Movement in Bangladesh, where students sacrificed their lives advocating for their mother language, Bangla, on February 21, 1952 .
The day was declared by UNESCO in 1999, and it’s been observed globally since 2000 ³ ¹ ². The theme for 2025 is “Languages matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day,” which highlights the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingual education .
In Agartala, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission observed the day with reverence, laying wreaths at the temporary Martyrs’ Memorial and flying the national flag of Bangladesh at half-mast . A state-level event was also held at the Agartala Town Hall, organized by the Department of School Education, which included cultural performances celebrating language and cultural diversity.
The observance of International Mother Language Day emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting all languages, respecting linguistic diversity, and ensuring that all languages are cherished and preserved for future generations.
