Agartala: Feb 17: The Tripura Jana Adhikar Sangram Parishad has announced a three-hour mass sit-in protest in Agartala on February 20th. The protest will begin at 11 am at Paradise Chowmuhani, Agartala, as part of a larger movement aimed at addressing the socio-economic issues faced by the people of Tripura. This announcement was made by Subrata Bhowmik, the president of the organization, during a press conference held by the central committee of the Tripura Jana Adhikar Sangram Parishad in Dhaleswar on Monday.
Bhowmik expressed grave concern over the worsening conditions faced by farmers and working people in the state, highlighting that they are struggling due to a lack of income. He accused the ruling government of diverting attention from these pressing issues by stoking communal tensions in the state. Bhowmik pointed to several recent incidents of communal violence, including those in Kadamtala, Panisagar, and Rani Bazar, as attempts to cover up the struggles of the common people.
The mass sit-in has been organized to protest against these tactics of creating unrest and to raise awareness among the public about the economic hardships they are facing. Bhowmik emphasized that the protest aims to empower people to address their problems and secure better livelihoods. The movement will be organized in phases, with 22 key demands at its core.
Some of the major demands include providing employment opportunities for the unemployed or offering unemployment allowances, filling vacant posts in government departments, conducting a caste-based census, taking stringent action against communal and extremist elements, and increasing social allowances to Rs. 6,000. Bhowmik also stressed the importance of tackling the growing sense of insecurity and ensuring that people’s voices are heard in the fight for basic rights and justice.
