Agartala: Feb 09: Tripura’s Agriculture Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, chaired a meeting of the State Level Nodal Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture today, where he announced plans to preserve river water for future generations. The state’s rivers mostly flow north, and the government aims to implement water retention measures, public conservation, pond excavation, and tree plantation programs .
These initiatives focus on promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing the state’s agricultural infrastructure. Interestingly, the minister mentioned that Tripura once had over 250 waterfalls, but only a few are operational today. The government plans to revive these waterfalls to restore their natural beauty and ecological benefits.
The meeting emphasized the importance of sustainable resource management and conservation practices. With the State Level Nodal Agency and government intervention, these programs aim to improve water management, promote afforestation, and rejuvenate the natural environment, benefiting both present and future generations.
Tripura has been actively working towards sustainable development, with initiatives like the “Sustainable Catchment Forest Management” project, which aims to improve forest quality and livelihoods of forest-dependent communities ². The state has also prepared a “Vision 2030” document, outlining its strategy for economic, social, and environmental development .
