Agartala: Feb 07: A court in Tripura has sentenced Debashish Das to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl in July 2019. The victim, who was left alone at her home in Nehal Chandranagar area, gave birth to a baby girl in April 2020. The minor’s mother filed a case at the Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station on May 5, 2020.
After hearing the testimony of 22 witnesses, Judge Debashish Kar found Das guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Das was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the POCSO Act. He was also sentenced to three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 under the IPC.
This verdict is seen as a significant step towards justice for the minor girl and her family. It also serves as a deterrent to perpetrators of crimes against women and children. The POCSO Act, which was enacted in 2012, provides for stringent punishment for sexual offences against children .
