Agartala, January 25: In a significant operation ahead of Republic Day celebrations, two arms dealers were arrested in North Tripura district on Saturday.
Police recovered a factory-made pistol and ammunition from their possession, raising concerns over potential security threats as this is the second arrest of arms dealer with weapon in recent times.
North Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Avinash Rai confirmed the arrests and identified the accused as Neeraj Kumar and Indal Mukhiya, both hailing from Samastipur, Bihar.
According to the SP, the duo had arrived in Dharmanagar by train and were staying at a hotel. Acting on specific intelligence provided by the District Intelligence Bureau, a team led by Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) conducted a raid in the early hours of Saturday, which led to the recovery of the weapon and the arrest of the suspects.
A case has been registered under the Arms Act at Dharmanagar police station, and further interrogation is underway to determine their motives and whether they have any links to larger criminal networks.
This is the second arrest of arms dealers in Tripura within a week. Earlier, a person was apprehended in the Milanchakra Adarshapalli area of Agartala with a pistol.
The recent arrests underscore the need for heightened vigilance in the state as security agencies work to ensure a safe and peaceful Republic Day celebration.
