Agartala, January 16: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha commended the state police for their outstanding contribution to maintaining law and order in the state, particularly in 2024, during which two major elections—the Parliamentary and Panchayat polls—were conducted almost incident-free.
Speaking at the Police Week-2025 celebration at AD Nagar Police Line in Agartala, Saha highlighted the significant strides made in reducing crime and restoring peace in the state.
He cited National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data that revealed a 19.3% drop in overall crime in 2024 compared to the previous year, placing Tripura third-lowest in crime rate among India’s 28 states, an improvement from fifth place.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home Minister portfolio, detailed reductions in specific crime categories in 2024. Crime against women decreased by 55%, property-related crimes by 45%, physical assaults by 38%, communal violence by 75% and general violence declined by 37.2%
“Development is impossible without proper law and order, as external investments won’t come,” Saha remarked, reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance policy against offenders.
He proudly announced that Tripura became insurgency-free in 2024, following the surrender of 1,173 militants from the NLFT and ATTF at Jampuijala.
The Chief Minister also lauded the police for ensuring peaceful Parliamentary and Panchayat elections, in stark contrast to the violence-ridden polls during the Left Front regime.
Saha highlighted significant achievements in road safety, noting a drop in fatal road traffic accidents from 716 in 2014 to 578 in 2024, despite a 170% increase in vehicle numbers.
The state’s anti-drug initiatives under the “Nesha Mukt Tripura” campaign also saw remarkable success under the Tripura Police jointly with other security agencies.
He said that total 1,666 NDPS cases were registered during last three years while 3,079 drug traffickers were arrested and total drugs seized during the same period is ₹1,586 crore.
Giving details of the anti-drug operation in the year 2024 the CM said that 1.64 crore ganja plants were destroyed which is 132% increase compared to 2023, drugs seized in 2024 is worth ₹867 crore and which is 106% higher than 2023.
A Special Task Force (STF) under the Crime Branch was formed to enhance NDPS investigations the Chief Minister said and he also detailed actions against illegal infiltration, noting a 238% increase in cases against Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals in 2024. Arrests surged by 344%, and cases against touts facilitating border crossings rose sevenfold.
Cybercrime efforts were equally notable, with ₹2.86 crore recovered in cyber fraud cases in 2024, and ₹17.6 lakh returned to victims.
Saha also acknowledged the police’s role in community engagement and their active participation in social initiatives.
During the event, he inspected the parade, paid tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives, and distributed prizes and cheques to their families.
Chief Secretary JK Sinha, DGP Amitabh Ranjan, and other senior officials attended the program.
