Agartala: Jan 13: Finance Minister Pranjit Singh Roy revealed that 31.47 acres of government land in Agartala city are under illegal occupation. This information was shared in response to a question by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma during the 13th Assembly session. Although the state government acknowledges the issue, it doesn’t plan to evict the occupants immediately.
According to the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act, 1960, unauthorized occupation of government land is illegal and punishable by law. The Act allows for eviction and fines up to six times the annual land assessment. Additionally, the Tripura Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1983, grants powers to District Magistrates to recover government land from unauthorized occupants.
Despite these laws, the government hasn’t disclosed plans for eviction, highlighting a significant issue of illegal land occupation in Agartala. The government’s inaction may be seen as a lack of will to protect government property and enforce the law.
