Agartala: Dec 09: Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, the Tripura Royal Scion and Tipra Motha leader, and Member of Parliament Kriti Debi Singh, met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss several crucial issues. These included the Tiprasa Accord, border fencing and patrolling with Bangladesh, and the 125th Constitutional Amendment.
The meeting focused on ensuring the proper implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, strengthening border security, and addressing matters related to the 125th Amendment. They also emphasized the need for improved fencing and patrolling along the Bangladesh border to enhance regional security.
A key outcome of the meeting was the announcement of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit to Tripura in December, demonstrating the central government’s interest in addressing regional concerns.
Additionally, MP Kriti Debi Singh submitted a letter to Amit Shah, urging the implementation of the 125th Amendment in the Sixth Schedule areas of the Northeast. This amendment aims to empower these regions with greater autonomy.
The Sixth Schedule, which applies to the tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, provides for the administration of these areas and allows for autonomous district councils and regional councils ¹. These councils have legislative, executive, judicial, and financial powers.
The 125th Amendment holds significant potential to boost administrative and financial autonomy, socio-economic development, and cultural preservation for these areas. Pradyot emphasized the urgent need for its implementation to meet the unique challenges of the region.
