Agartala, December 5: In a significant breakthrough against transborder smuggling, the 81 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) seized 2.177 kilograms of gold valued at ₹1.72 crores during an overnight operation in NC Nagar under Sonamura in Sepahijala district of Tripura.
The seizure is one of the largest recorded in the state over the past two years, according to a senior BSF officials.
Rajesh Kumar Langeh, Second-in-Command of the BSF 81 battalion, revealed that the operation was conducted based on specific intelligence about gold being smuggled across the India-Bangladesh border. Acting swiftly, the Company Commander of NC Nagar border out post (BOP) mobilized resources and intercepted the gold on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The gold, comprising biscuits and nuts, was abandoned by smugglers from both sides of the border as they fled upon spotting the BSF personnel. The dense vegetation and difficult terrain provided cover for their escape.
BSF has initiated efforts through its intelligence networks to identify and apprehend the Indian smugglers involved in the operation.
Smuggling of gold, drugs, arms, and human trafficking remains a persistent challenge along the 856-km international border Tripura shares with Bangladesh.
BSF continues to strengthen its surveillance and operational measures to curb these activities effectively.
