Agartala, November 08:
In a significant crackdown on cross-border infiltration, six Bangladeshi nationals, including three persons of the third gender, were arrested on charges of entering Tripura illegally. They were forwarded to court today.
The arrests were made at Jirania railway station by the Agartala Government Railway Police (GRP) in collaboration with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and other sister agencies during a joint operation conducted on Thursday, following a tip-off.
The arrested individuals initially identified themselves as residents of Bishalgarh in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. However, under intensive interrogation, they confessed to having crossed into India from Bangladesh on November 6. Their objective was reportedly to travel to Mumbai via train from Jirania.
Officer-in-Charge of Agartala GRP, Tapas Das, said that four of the detained individuals hail from Kishoreganj district, while the remaining two are residents of Noakhali district in Bangladesh.
“We have registered a case against them under the IPP Act, BNS Act, and the Foreigners Act. Investigations are underway to ascertain whether more individuals are involved in this operation,” said Das.
The police recovered six mobile phones and documents from the detainees, who lacked valid travel documents.
In a separate incident on Thursday, the BSF apprehended nine Bangladeshis from two different locations in the state, highlighting the growing challenge of cross-border infiltration.
