Agartala, October 25: CPIM state Ssecretary and Opposition Leader of Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhary took aim at TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, accusing him of failing to deliver on promises to the tribal communities in Tripura.
Chaudhury’s comments follow recent social media lives by Debbarma, in which he reiterated that TIPRA Motha is not a BJP affiliate or its B-team and that its representatives should actively challenge injustice, corruption, and communal violence in the state.
Speaking to reporter, Chaudhury, a former MP, alleged that both the BJP and TIPRA Motha gained power through misleading promises that they have since abandoned.
He criticized TIPRA Motha for failing to fulfill its primary election pledge, the creation of a “Greater Tipraland,” an autonomous region for the indigenous people that would include tribal-dominated areas of Tripura as well as parts of neighboring Assam, Mizoram, and even parts of Bangladesh.
According to Chaudhury, Debbarma was well aware of the impracticality of this goal, yet used it to rally support from tribal voters, particularly the youth, who look up to him as a leader from Tripura’s royal family.
After TIPRA Motha capturing control of the TTAADC and gained significant influence by winning 13 Assembly seats to become the main Opposition party by raising it voice against the BJP, Chaudhury noted that the Motha party shifted focus, forming an alliance with the same BJP by securing two ministerial positions.
This move, he argued, diluted TIPRA Motha’s initial stance of standing firmly against the ruling party’s policies.
Chaudhury further criticized a tripartite agreement between TIPRA Motha, the BJP-led state government, and the central government, which he termed as “cosmetic” and unlikely to address the fundamental issues facing the tribal communities.
He claimed the agreement was intended merely to delay and not address genuine efforts for tribal development, as Debbarma previously assured his supporters that substantial outcomes would materialize within six months.
Chaudhury said that now nearly a year later, there has been no concrete progress of the tripartite agreement and only again talks, which has caused mounting frustration among TIPRA Motha supporters.
Drawing a parallel with the unfulfilled promises made by the former IPFT chief NC Debbarma, Chaudhury warned that TIPRA Motha is on a similar path of disappointing its base.
He accused Pradyot of attempting to distract the public ahead of upcoming village council elections, but expressed confidence that voters are now wise to political tactics and are unlikely to be misled repeatedly.
