Agartala, October 22: In a major victory against drug trafficking in Tripura, police from Amtali Police Station, in the outskirts of Agartala, arrested a notorious drug trafficker, Debojit Bhowmik, from the Fultali Nayapara area near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of Yaba tablets and dry marijuana, said Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura district, Dr. Kiran Kumar.
Acting on specific intelligence about the storage of drugs in a house in the bordering area, the Amtali police team, under the leadership of SDPO Sankar Chandra Das, launched a swift raid.
“During the operation, we seized six kilograms of dry marijuana and 16,000 Yaba tablets from the trafficker’s possession,” Dr. Kiran Kumar stated.
Yaba, a potent mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, has become a major concern in the region, contributing to rising drug abuse and trafficking issues.
The market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be over ₹40 lakh, making this a significant haul for the police.
SP Dr. Kumar emphasized that this bust is a major success in the ongoing fight against drug smuggling in West Tripura.
Debojit Bhowmik, the arrested trafficker, is now in police custody and undergoing interrogation.
Authorities are working to uncover his network of associates, how he procured such large quantities of drugs, and his intended delivery routes.
Police believe that further investigation will reveal more about the organized drug trafficking operations in the region, especially given Tripura’s proximity to international borders and its increasing role as a corridor for illegal narcotics.
An NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case has been registered against Bhowmik, and police are hopeful that this arrest will lead to more breakthroughs in dismantling drug syndicates in the state.
Dr. Kumar reiterated the department’s commitment to cracking down on the narcotics trade, stating that such operations will continue to target drug smugglers who pose a severe threat to the safety and well-being of local communities.
