Agartala: Oct 05: The police administration has remained silent regarding the harassment of on-duty traffic police personnel, prompting the general public to voice their concerns. In response to the harassment of two traffic police personnel by unruly youths on a public road in Agartala on Mahalaya evening, tribal youths staged a sit-in today. They are demanding the immediate arrest of the accused youths involved in the incident to uphold the rule of law.
On the evening of October 2, two tribal traffic officials were performing their duties in the Netaji Chowmuhani area. When they asked three youths, who appeared to be intoxicated, to stop their bikes for violating traffic rules, the youths ignored the request and continued driving. One traffic officer then stopped their bike, which angered the youths. They attacked the traffic officials, alleging that one officer had pulled one of them by the neck to steal his chain. The youths verbally abused the officer, using vulgar language and making derogatory remarks about his caste. The situation escalated to physical assault, with the traffic officials unable to defend themselves. The vulgarity of the abuse caused women passing by to flee the scene, but the youths continued their behavior, implying they had the backing of the ruling party.
After the incident, the youths threatened the traffic police personnel, warning them of further harm and making threats about their safety. Despite the severity of the harassment, no action has been taken against the accused, leaving the victims deeply hurt and saddened.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions among intellectual circles. While there are complaints about the traffic system in Agartala, many intellectuals cannot condone the physical and mental harassment of on-duty traffic police personnel. In protest, tribal youths staged a sit-in at the North Gate area of the capital. A police officer confirmed that a case has been registered regarding the harassment, and an investigation is underway.
