The central government, in response to the devastating floods in Tripura, is dispatching an advance Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) led by B.C. Joshi, Joint Secretary (Foreigners Division), Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi. The team comprises representatives from various departments, including Agriculture, Expenditure (Ministry of Finance), Jal Shakti (Department of Water Resources), Rural Development, and Road Transport and Highways. Their mission is to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation in Tripura.
Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, along with other officials, held a press conference in Agartala to provide updates. The heavy and continuous rainfall from August 19 to 23 caused unprecedented floods in the state. Although rainfall has decreased since August 24, the water level of the Gomati River at Sonamura remains critical.
As of now, 492 relief camps are operational, providing shelter to over 72,000 individuals. The District Administration continues to offer essential relief, including food, drinking water, and medical assistance. Additionally, relief efforts involve distributing clothes to those in need.
State Disaster Response Force (TSR) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are actively engaged in relief operations across Gomati and Sepahijala Districts. Civil Defense volunteers and Aapda Mitra are also contributing to relief efforts.
Tragically, 31 people have lost their lives, two are injured, and one person remains missing due to the floods.
Efforts to restore drinking water sources are underway, with 977 out of 3273 Drinking Water Schemes already repaired. Quality testing ensures compliance with BIS standards, and district authorities are providing safe drinking water through water tankers.
Health professionals have visited relief camps, treating 35,993 individuals and conducting 1799 health camps. Measures include procuring bleaching powder, halogen tablets, zinc tablets, and fever medications.
A committee, led by Prashant Badal Negi from the Tourism Department, collaborates with NGOs for relief material collection and distribution.
The Relief Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department has allocated Rs. 69 crore to eight districts and Rs. 5 crore each to the Agriculture and Power Departments, totaling Rs. 79 crore in released funds.
