Agartala, August 25: In a poignant display of compassion, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the home of Chiranjeet Dey, one of the 25 victims who tragically lost their lives in the recent floods that devastated the state with an initial estimated loss of around Rs 15000 crores.
Chiranjeet, a 30-year-old private vehicle driver, lost his life while heroically attempting to save others during the floods that struck the Indranagar area in Agartala on the night of August 22.
The young man, who was the sole breadwinner for his family, including his ailing father who suffered from a brain stroke, his elderly mother, and three elder sisters, was mourned deeply by the community.
His family performed the ‘Shradh’ ceremony on the fourth day following his death, as per Hindu rituals observed for unnatural deaths.
The Chief Minister’s visit coincided with this solemn occasion, where he met with the grieving family to offer his condolences.
During the visit, CM Saha expressed his heartfelt sympathies to Chiranjeet’s parents and sisters, acknowledging the immense void left by his untimely demise.
In a gesture of support, he handed over a cheque of Rs 4 lakh to the family, an ex-gratia amount sanctioned by the government from its disaster management fund.
“The government’s assistance is merely a token; the vacuum left by Chiranjeet’s loss can never be filled,” stated CM Saha, emphasizing the irreplaceable nature of the young man’s life.
In addition to the financial aid, CM Saha directed the District Magistrate (DM) to ensure that the family receives continued support. This includes maintaining their house and providing social pensions to both of Chiranjeet’s parents, recognizing that he was the sole earning member of the household.
The Chief Minister’s visit and the accompanying measures reflect the government’s commitment to providing relief and assistance to those affected by the floods, as well as honoring the bravery and sacrifice of individuals like Chiranjeet Dey.
