Agartala, August 20: Continuous heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours has led to widespread flooding in various parts of Tripura, including few areas in the outskirts of the capital city of Agartala. Low-lying areas, particularly those adjacent to the Howrah River, have been severely affected.
The situation has turned grim in Southern Tripura’s Debipur under the Santir Bazaar constituency, where reportedly Seven people have tragically lost their lives due to landslide.
With rivers across the state swelling rapidly, the threat of further casualties looms large.
In response to the crisis, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to evacuate residents from the most affected areas.
People are being transported by boats to temporary camps established by the district administration.
These camps have been equipped with all necessary amenities to accommodate the displaced.
In Agartala, two temporary shelters have been set up in the Baldakhal area on the city’s outskirts to provide refuge to those affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, the Assam-Agartala National Highway 8, a crucial transportation link for the state, has been inundated, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The highway is considered the lifeline of Tripura, and its flooding has added to the challenges faced by the state.
Senior officials from the administration are on the ground, closely monitoring the situation and overseeing the ongoing evacuation efforts.
The authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the residents and to minimize the impact of the floods as the state braces for more rainfall.
