Agartala, July 15
A delegation of BJP leaders encountered significant public anger during their visit to Gandatwisa on Monday.
The team, led by Minister Tinku Roy alongwith former MP Rebati Tripura, party’s vice president Subal Bhowmik, and MLA Rampada Jamatia, faced a hostile reception from the non-tribal residents affected by recent violence.
Four days after the incident, the leaders visited Gandatwisa to assess the situation. Victims of the violence, whose homes, shops, belongings, domestic animals, and vehicles were looted and gutted, blocked the roads in protest.
The furious residents compelled the BJP delegation to cut short their visit and seek refuge in the local SDM office for safety.
To manage the situation, a large number of security forces were deployed to prevent any harm to the visiting team.
Later speaking to reporters, Minister Tinku Roy described the incident as an outburst of helpless citizens rather than a protest.
He acknowledged the dire situation of the residents who had been forced to live on the streets for the past three days.
Roy conveyed that the Chief Minister had dispatched the team to understand the plight of those displaced by the violence and to expedite the compensation process.
He emphasized that while the past cannot be changed, the government is committed to ensuring that victims receive at least 25 percent of their compensation within the next two days.
“The Chief Minister has instructed us to take initiatives so that the victims can return to their homes,” Roy said.
He added that the district administration and revenue department have already conducted assessments to facilitate the prompt disbursement of compensation.
Minister Roy also highlighted the importance of restoring security and reopening the local market to allow tribal and non-tribal communities to live peacefully.
During their visit, the BJP team met with representatives of the victimized families and assured them of swift action to address their grievances.
The leaders promised that all necessary steps would be taken to restore normalcy and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
