Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang called on the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ji, at the Parliament House in New Delhi today.
At the outset of the meeting, hecongratulated the Prime Minister on his third consecutive electoral victory and expressed confidence in his leadership.
Mr Golay also extended gratitude for his unwavering support, especially for the prompt relief efforts following the Sikkim flash flood in October 2023.
During the meeting, both discussed several important issues, including the demands for tribal status for 12 indigenous communities, the Limboo-Tamang seat reservation in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, and the visit of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorji to Sikkim.
CM also briefed the Prime Minister on initiative to build a multimodal corridor with an integrated checkpost between Sikkim and eastern Nepal at Chewa Bhanjyang. Additionally, he presented the Post Disaster Need Assessment report, estimating Rs. 3673.25 crore for recovery and reconstruction, emphasizing the need for continued support.
Given the strategic importance of NH-10, the chief Minister requested a permanent solution to its frequent disruptions, suggesting that its maintenance be entrusted to a Central Agency such as the NHAI or NHIDCL.
“I also sought urgent intervention to restore NH-310A, which connects Gangtok to the Indo-China border, following recent cloudbursts in North Sikkim. Further, I proposed the development of a Himalayan Railway Line between Bakrakote in West Bengal and Rorathang in Sikkim, presenting historical correspondence from 1917 to support this initiative” the CM wrote in Facebook.
He also commended the Prime Minister’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, which raises awareness about environmental conservation by planting a sapling in honor of mothers. He informed that Sikkim will observe this initiative on July 7, 2024.
Looking ahead, as Sikkim will celebrate its 50th Statehood Day on May 16, 2025, CM extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest, which he graciously accepted.
The meeting was also attended by MP (Lok Sabha) Shri Indra Hang Subba and MP (Rajya Sabha) Shri DT Lepcha.
