Agartala, June 18: The main Opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Tripura staged a significant protest outside the main gate of the police headquarters in Agartala on Tuesday.
The demonstration was led by several senior leaders, including former MP Sankar Prasad Datta, Ex-MLA Ratan Das, and former Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Radha Charan Debbarma blocked the main gate and raise slogans as they alleged police inaction and biased.
The CPIM accused the police of inaction in response to their complaints regarding attacks on their cadres and leaders in various locations across the West Tripura district.
They alleged that miscreants associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were behind these attacks and that despite repeated complaints lodged at police stations, no steps had been taken to apprehend the culprits. Instead, the CPIM claimed that the police were safeguarding the attackers instead of protecting the victims.
The protest saw the participation of numerous CPIM supporters who echoed the leaders’ demands for impartial law enforcement.
The demonstrators emphasized that the police should uphold their commitment to maintaining law and order in the state rather than functioning under the influence of any political party.
The situation de-escalated when a delegation of five senior CPIM leaders was called for a meeting with Superintendent of Police West, Kiren Kumar K and to whom the opposition leaders also submitted a memorandum of their demands.
Following assurances from the SP that appropriate actions would be taken against the alleged perpetrators, the CPIM lifted the blockade.
The protest highlighted ongoing tensions in Tripura’s political landscape, with the CPIM pressing for accountability and unbiased action from law enforcement agencies amid claims of political bias and violence.
