Agartala, March 31: The North Tripura district police have arrested the wanted notorious dacoit chief, Nazim Uddin, said a senior police official on Sunday.
Hailing from the Fulbari area under the Kadamtala block of North district, Nazim Uddin had long been a source of terror not only in Tripura but also in the Barak Valley of the adjoining state of Assam.
According to the Bhanupada Chakraborty the North district Superintendent of Police (SP), Nazim Uddin was found in possession of two country-made firearms, two large machetes, lock cutters, and various other items.
Following his arrest, the police produced him in court and obtained custody for interrogation.
The SP revealed that the arrest was made based on prior information indicating that a group of dacoits was gathering in the forest area of northern Ganganagar in Bagbasa before planning a robbery. Upon reaching the location, on Friday early morning the police were met with gunfire.
He added that in self-defence, the police responded with fire, resulting in a crossfire. Eventually, the notorious gang leader was apprehended, although one of his accomplices managed to escape.
During interrogation, Nazim Uddin confessed to being part of a gang of six members responsible for recent robberies in Dharmanagar, Kumarghat, and even the capital city, Agartala.
The police have filed a case against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.
However, he remains wanted in connection with several other cases across the state. Police officers from respective police stations will conduct further interrogations in connection with these cases, stated the SP in presence of Dharmanagar subdivisional police official (SDPO) Debasish Saha and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dharmanagar police station Himadri Sarkar.
