Agartala, March 11: The Tripura unit of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) demonstrated a protest in Agartala on Monday, for establishing the farmers rights.
The demonstration was also held towards expressing solidarity with farmers’ movements in Punjab, Haryana, and other North Indian states as they are scheduled to organise a Maha Panchayat at the national capital on March 14.
Under the banner of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), farmers are mobilizing to march towards Delhi’s Ram Lila Maidan on March 14 to protest against the alleged apathy of the BJP-led central government towards improving farmers’ conditions and fulfilling its promises, particularly regarding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, including Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farm produce.
Former Lok Sabha member and CITU leader Sankar Prasad Datta criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for failing to deliver on his promise of providing MSP.
He highlighted the recent incident in which police in BJP-led Haryana allegedly shot dead a young farmer near the Delhi border and injured several others and in response, a Maha Panchayat is scheduled in Delhi on March 14, despite restrictions on farmer gatherings.
In solidarity with the nationwide agitation, farmers in Tripura affiliated
with All India Kisan Sabha, the farmers’ wing of the Communist Party of India Marxist, gathered at Orient Chowmhuni for the protest.
Former Deputy Speaker and SKM leader of Tripura, Pavitra Kar, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the farmers’ demands and the protesters, including farmers and farmer organizations from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, which are calling for MSP for their produce, a legal guarantee for MSP, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases against farmers, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
