Agartala, January 4:Members of the CITU-affiliated Tripura Motor Sramik Union, a trade union representing automobile-related workers, including drivers and helpers under the All India Road Transport Federation banner, took to the streets in Agartala on Thursday.
The protest aimed at urging the repeal of recent amendments to hit-and-run laws, which increased jail terms and fines.
Brandishing banners and vehemently opposing the newly enacted law, members of the organization, predominantly consisting of truck, bus, auto-rickshaw, and e-rickshaw drivers, demanded the withdrawal of proposed changes.
They emphasized the need for necessary security arrangements for drivers, urging discussions with transport organizations.
Joining the protest, members from other organizations, including Tripura Auto Rickshaw Workers Union, Tripura e-Rickshaw Sramik Union, and TRTC Sramik Union, amplified the collective voice against the stringent amendments.
Expressing concerns, the drivers argued that the heightened penalties for those involved in ‘hit-and-run’ accidents would instill fear, posing challenges for any driver to operate.
They highlighted the potential impact on their livelihoods and the overall surface transportation system, urging authorities to reconsider the recent changes.
