Agartala, December 16:On the occasion of ‘Vijoy Dibosh’ (Victory Day), commemorated annually on December 16, Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, accompanied by the state’s Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Indian Army officials, and other dignitaries, paid homage to the martyrs of the Bangladesh Liberation War.
The ceremony took place at the 1971 war memorial column in the Albert Ekka War Memorial park in Agartala.
‘Vijoy Dibosh’ signifies India’s decisive military triumph over Pakistan in 1971, leading to the establishment of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
Grateful for the Indian Army’s pivotal role, Bangladesh acknowledges the support that played a crucial part in defeating the oppressive Pakistani army.
In attendance were not only security force personnel but also retired army, navy, and air force officers, Bangladesh Liberation freedom fighters, and civil administration officials, all gathering to pay tribute to the war heroes.
Governor Nallu emphasized that India, with one of the world’s largest armies, achieved a historic victory by liberating Bangladesh, witnessing the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops and officers – the largest military surrender since World War II.
Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora, the then General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command, accepted the instrument of surrender from Lt Gen AAK Niazi of the Pakistan Army in Dhaka.
As a symbolic gesture, the Governor also flagged in a bike and cycle rally on this significant occasion.
Even 52 years later, the state of Tripura, which once sheltered 1.8 million refugees and numerous freedom fighters when its population was just 1.5 million, continues to hold deep sentiments for Bangladesh’s liberation.
