June 27:Tripura’s Khowai district police made a significant seizure of dry ganja (cannabis) from a container truck during a vehicle inspection at a remote checkpoint in Teliamura on Tuesday said a senior police officer.
Inspector Subrata Chakraborty who led the operation stated, ‘We had received specific information about the transportation of ganja and had the vehicle’s registration number. Our team intercepted the vehicle at Hawaibari Nakapoint and discovered that the container was loaded with used tires. In the presence of the District Collector Magistrate (DCM), we unloaded the tires and uncovered hidden packets of ganja weighing approximately 551 kilograms.’
The driver and co-driver of the vehicle, both belonging to Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested and are in custody as the investigation continues.
Chakraborty further mentioned, ‘Two individuals, the driver Muhammad Sami and co-driver Muhammad Royaj, both from Uttar Pradesh (UP), have been arrested. The vehicle bears the registration number UP 21 CN 1240. The estimated market value of the seized dry ganja is around Rs 50 lakh. We are currently investigating the origin and destination of the consignment.’
Police has registered a NDPS case and both arrests shall be produced in the court tomorrow with appeal of police remand for further investigation.
Illegal smuggling of dry ganja is being regularly reported from various parts of the state.
