Khumulwng, June 19 :In a show of unity, hundreds of tribal students from 13 schools and colleges, all members of the TWIPRA Students’ Federation (TSF), took to the streets in Khumulwng, the headquarters of TTAADC, on Monday. Their purpose was to demand the implementation of the Roman script for Kakborak by the Tripura state government.
This demand, which has persisted for more than five decades, gained renewed momentum in recent months when students, who had studied Kakborak for the CBSE board examination, were compelled to answer in the Bengali script due to the absence of an option for the Bengali or Roman script, unlike the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE).
The agitators, under the Sadar East division of TSF, expressed their determination to continue the protest until their demand is fulfilled.
Following the rally, a delegation of representatives from TSF submitted a memorandum to the Subdivisional Magistrate in Jirania, outlining their grievances and expectations.
Additionally, similar agitations are planned in other divisions of the Sadar region. Subsequently, a large-scale rally advocating for the use of the Roman script for Kakborak will be organized in the capital city of Agartala, attracting supporters from across the state.
The TSF’s resolute stance reflects the importance of linguistic rights and cultural preservation.
The implementation of the Roman script for Kakborak is seen as crucial in promoting inclusivity and providing students with the opportunity to express themselves effectively in their native language.
The rally serves as a platform for tribal students to assert their demands and raise awareness about the need for linguistic equality in the education system as they viewed that as the language is their so the choice of script is their right.
