Agartala, June 19:TIPRA Motha, led by its chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, has declared its intention to agitate for its demands, including the establishment of Greater Tipraland and the long-pending elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) village council.
Debbarma made this announcement while addressing reporters at the MBB airport upon his return from Mumbai, where he attended a meeting of various political parties across the nation on India in 2047.
Debbarma alleged that despite holding other elections, such as those for urban bodies, assembly, and by-elections in Tripura, the village council poll has intentionally been delayed for over two years.
He cited various pretexts, including the pandemic and the inclusion of Mizoram Bru refugees in the voter list, as reasons for the delay.
Debbarma emphasized that the indigenous population of the state has recognized this and will soon take to the streets to demand the village council elections, as absence of elected representatives hampers the development process in the TTAADC area.
Moreover, Debbarma criticized the BJP, claiming that prior to the recent assembly election, the party made several promises for the development of indigenous people, such as direct funding and increased power for the TTAADC. However, none of these promises have been fulfilled.
He also raised the issue of adopting the Roman script for Kakborak, which the state government has been unwilling to accept.
Debbarma further alleged that the government is intentionally keeping the tribal people in a state of poverty.
In a stern warning, Debbarma threatened that if the government fails to address the issues faced by the tribal community, massive protests will soon erupt across the state.
He reiterated that the demand for Greater Tipraland is not party-specific but constitutional and essential for the better future of the tribal community.
The announcement by TIPRA Motha signifies their determination to advocate for the rights and development of the indigenous people of Tripura.
Their demands for Greater Tipraland and the prompt conduct of the TTAADC village council elections highlight the need for inclusive governance and equal representation for all communities in the state.
