Agartala: Dec 06: Transport workers led by CPIM affiliated trade union – Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), hit the streets in Tripura’s capital Agartala during a mass deputation to protest against the government’s on various issues including the hike in fuel prices, privatisation of the public transport sector and failure in adopting policies assuring future security to retire workers in this service.
The rally started from CITU headquarters at Office Lane and went through the streets of the capital as the members of Tripura Autorickshaw Workers Union and Tripura Motor Workers Union with red flags raised slogans against the unnatural hike in price of petrol, diesel and CNG gas beside privatisation in public transportation sectors like railways, airports and bus terminals beside lacking of policies assuring pension to retired workers of the transport sector.
Amal Chakraborty, CITU state secretary who led the rally said that under the present regime there is no democracy in Tripura as the workers are deprived of being members of any trade unions and large number of trade union offices is being destroyed. He also said that there is no future security like retirement benefit or any social pension for the transport workers since no transport policy has been implemented or adopted by the government.
Chakraborty threatened that if the BJP led government of Tripura does not adopt pro transport worker policies then they shall have no other option but to work for changing the government. Later a delegation of CITU leaders submitted a memorandum of their demands to the Deputy Joint Transport Commissioner.
